MSI Expects to Ship 50% More Notebooks in 2010

According to company chairman Joseph Hsu, MSI has big plans for 2010, primarily with its notebook and all-in-one PC business. Hsu said he expects shipments of the former to jump by 50 percent this year, while he expects to the latter to do the same, if not more.

Meeting those goals might not be too hard to do. MSI's notebook shipments took a serious hit by inventory issues in the first half of 2009, Hsu noted, leaving the company to play catch-up for the rest of the year. Even so, MSI's branded notebook shipments were still higher than those in 2008.

As 2010 rolls along, Hsu said consumers can expect more notebook models with varying specifications, rather than trying to achieve significant shipment volumes with just a handful of models.

Here's an interesting tidbit for those of you who can't devour enough Nexus One details. According to research firm iSuppli, Google's new smartphone consists of $174.15 worth of parts. This includes both inner (designed by Google) and outer (designed by HTC) components.

By comparison, would-be Nexus One owners are being asked to shell out $179 for the smartphone super phone when accompanied by a two-year T-Mobile service agreement, or $529 for the standalone phone. Not included in any of the price quotes? Manufacturing, packaging, software, and other related costs.

"Items like the durable unibody construction, the blazingly fast Snapdragon baseband processor, and the bright and sharp Active-Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode (AMOLED) display all have been seen in previous phones, but never before combined into a single design," Kevin Keller, senior analyst for iSuppli, said in a statement.

As for the most expensive part of the Nexus One, that distinction belongs to the Snapdragon processor, which runs $30.50, or about 20 percent of the total cost. In second place is the 512MB of DDR memory ($20.40), followed by the Bluetooth/WLAN hardware ($8.20).

Google Nexus One Off to Turbulent Start with 3G Problems

Like most new phones, Google’s new baby the Nexus One is getting off to a rocky start. Numerous people on the Nexus One support forums are reporting spotty 3G service in areas that are supposedly blanketed with 3G. With the smallest 3G footprint of the big four US carriers, you can bet T-Mobile users know exactly where they can find that high-speed goodness.

Specifically, users say that the phone will switch back and forth between 3G and the slower EDGE data in 3G saturated areas. The more unlucky are reporting no 3G at all. Some users have even gone so far as to put their Nexus One SIM card in another T-Mobile phone to prove that Google’s new device isn’t connecting to the available 3G network. There are even some pics of other T-Mobile devices with 3G right next to a Nexus one rocking EDGE.

Just today we’re getting word that T-Mobile and Google have acknowledged a possible issue affecting a “small number” of customers. T-Mobile says to hold tight while they look into it. Anyone out there have a Nexus One? Any issues?

Notebook Vendors Not Seeing Much Interest in Ultra-thins

There's a definite trend towards smaller, more portable gadgets, which, in addition to battery life, is a large reason why netbooks have become so popular. But what about ultra-thins?

Citing sources from "notebook players," DigiTimes says ultra-thin notebooks will only eat up 15 percent of global notebook shipments in the first half of 2010. The reason, sources say, is because of their awkward market position and price points.

There are a bevy of Intel chips ready to tackle the ultra-thin market, including the dual-core SU9600, SU9400, SU7300, SU4100, and SU2300, as well as the single-core Celeron 743 chips, but ultra-thins built around these chips are having trouble competing with entry-level notebooks, both in terms of price and performance.

Going forward, expect vendors to push their ultra-thin lineups to the business market, though price/performance ratios will still present a hurdle.

Fermi Cards to Turn Up the Heat

Assuming no more delays or last minute niggles, Nvidia's Fermi chips will be available in low quantities in just a couple of months. They're also going to run hotter than Nvidia's current gen GPUs, including the GTX 285, says news and rumor site Fudzilla.

"Fermi is a big chip, so this doesn't come as much a surprise. As long as it runs stable, people won't complain about it too much. We've seen the card in person at least twice so far and we can tell that the first one we saw has a dual-slot air cooler and runs quite hot," Fudzilla noted.

Keep in mind that any early looks might not be indicative of the final product, as Nvidia continues to tweak the design. And rumors have already begun swirling around a dual-GPU variant, although nobody knows when it might ship.
